American Poplar Tulipwood
Tulipwood is ideal for mouldings or when timber is being painted or dark-stained. Cost-effective timber.
Name:
Liriodendron tulipifera
Origin:
Eastern United States
Colour:
Heartwood is light cream to yellowish brown, with occasional streaks of grey or green. Sapwood is a pale yellow to white, not always clearly demarcated from the heartwood. It can also be seen in mineral-stained colours ranging from dark purple to red, green, or yellow, sometimes referred to as Rainbow Poplar. Colours tend to darken upon exposure to light.
Grain:
Poplar typically has a straight, uniform grain, with a medium texture. Low natural lustre.
Rot Resistance:
Heartwood is rated as being moderately durable to non-durable, and susceptible to insect attack.
Typical Applications:
veneer, flooring, boatbuilding, furniture, cabinetry, musical instruments (piano pin blocks), plywood, and turned objects.
Density:
510 kg/m3 average
Workability:
It is easy to work with and finishes a fine, smooth surface. It takes nails without tending to split and glues well. It can be stained or painted and holds hard enamel finishes excellently.
